Valentines Day Bread Recipe

Thoughts and Musings

This has to be one of the most fun recipes I have ever created. I found out you can use powdered purple sweet potatoes to make a pink bread, and my mind just ran away with ideas! My girls have loved joining me in the kitchen for this one. You can watch the YouTube how to or just follow the recipe below. Don’t forget to tag @Singing_Creek_Farm if you make this yourself!

Recipe:

Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups warm milk, 1/4 cups avocado or olive oil, 1/4 cup honey, 1 tablespoon yeast, 3 3/4 cups bread flour (may need up to 4 cups), 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons purple sweet potato powder (You can order this here), optional sprinkles.

Directions: Whisk together the warm milk, yeast, oil, and honey. Let sit for 15-20 minutes until yeast is active and bubbling. Mix in 3 1/2 cups of bread flour, salt, and purple sweet potato powder. If dough is still very sticky add in 1/4 cup more of flour, may need even a little more to get to the right consistency. Once the dough is just slightly sticky stop adding flour and turn out onto a tabletop to knead. knead for 8-10 minutes vigorously until dough has come together smoothly and bounces back when poked. Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with a towel or Saran Wrap and let rise for 30-45 minutes until doubled in size. Then punch down the dough and separate into 2 equal halves. If you want to add sprinkles then add 2 tablespoons to each loaf and quickly knead it until the sprinkles are evenly dispersed. Place into a bowl or batten to do final rise and cover (it will hold the shape of what you let it rise in, so keep that in mind). Preheat oven to 400. Once it is doubled in size again you can cut out hearts or use heart stickers to make a design on your bread. Making sure the stickers are well adhered to the bread surface, sprinkle flour on top of the dough. Take off the stickers being careful to leave no flour where the sticker once was. Score your dough and then bake in a dutch oven for 15 minutes with the lid on, and 5-10 more with it off until the crust is to your liking. If you do not have a dutch oven then bake on a baking sheet and dump a bowl of ice into the oven bottom when you first but the bread in for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool and then slice and enjoy!

Happy Baking!
